Sciton HALO laser handpiece on the cheek during a laser resurfacing treatment at NassifMD Medical Spa Manchester

HALO laser and laser resurfacing recovery: what to expect day by day

Quick answer: laser resurfacing recovery depends on the laser and how deep it goes. At NassifMD, the initial healing period after Sciton HALO is usually 5 to 7 days, ProFractional has minimal downtime, and deeper Contour TRL erbium resurfacing usually needs 1 to 2 weeks. Expect redness and swelling, then a rough, bronzed or peeling stage before fresher skin shows, with collagen changes continuing for months.

Online, one question gets posted again and again: what should I put on my skin after CO2 laser? Others ask whether people regret laser resurfacing, or why their acne scars look worse a few days after treatment. If nobody told you what to expect, the rough stage can be frightening.

This guide walks you through laser resurfacing recovery day by day for the Sciton treatments we use at NassifMD, what to put on your skin and when to call us. If you've had treatment with us, call 0161 877 8444, or contact our out-of-hours concierge team using the details in your aftercare information.

Why we use Sciton erbium lasers for resurfacing

Erbium (Er:YAG) and CO2 lasers can both resurface the skin. Er:YAG gives highly precise ablation with less thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. That gives our team more control over how deep each treatment goes, so resurfacing and recovery can be tailored more closely to your skin. CO2 generally produces more heat in the skin, so the two have different recovery characteristics. You can read more in our Sciton Contour TRL vs CO2 laser guide.

  • Sciton HALO: a hybrid fractional laser. One wavelength renews the surface while another works deeper to support collagen, treating texture, tone and sun damage with less downtime than a fully ablative laser.
  • Sciton ProFractional: creates microscopic treatment columns within scar tissue, leaving healthy skin between them to support healing. It's ideal for acne scars, C-section scars and surgical scars.
  • Sciton Contour TRL: a 2940nm Er:YAG laser whose depth can be adjusted from lighter resurfacing to deeper treatment for wrinkles, scarring and sun damage.

How our experts tailor your resurfacing treatment

Laser resurfacing is never one fixed treatment. Before recommending anything, our medically led team assesses your skin tone, pigmentation, previous treatments, recent sun exposure and the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation. For scars, we look at the type, depth and location of each one.

From there we choose the laser, the depth and the settings for you. Sometimes that means combining treatments, such as BBL for redness or pigmentation alongside resurfacing. Sometimes a lighter Nano or Micro Peel is the better choice. If you're not sure where to start, read which laser treatment is right for me?

Laser resurfacing recovery day by day

Use this as a general guide. Your practitioner will explain what to expect for your settings.

Treatment day

Straight after treatment your skin will look red and may feel warm and a little swollen. After deeper Contour TRL resurfacing, the skin can be red, swollen and sensitive. One of our team will contact you within 24 hours to check how you're getting on.

The first few days: the rough stage

This is the stage most people worry about. After HALO, the skin becomes bronzed and rough, like fine sandpaper, as tiny treated areas called MENDs work their way up and flake away. After deeper Contour TRL, the skin peels as the treated layers shed. Your skin can look darker and rougher than before, and scars can look more obvious. That's the healing process at work.

BBL and HALO healing diary: redness on day 1, the bronzed, freckled MENDs stage on days 2 to 5, and fresher skin by day 7

Days 5 to 7: fresher skin after HALO

The initial healing period after HALO is usually 5 to 7 days, depending on the settings used and how your skin responds. As the MENDs flake away, fresher skin shows underneath. ProFractional has minimal downtime because treatment is focused on the scar itself.

Weeks 1 to 2: deeper erbium resurfacing

Downtime after deeper Contour TRL resurfacing is usually 1 to 2 weeks. A lighter Er:YAG treatment needs less recovery, while deeper resurfacing involves a more significant healing period.

The following months: results keep building

Collagen remodelling continues beneath the skin, so texture, lines and scars can keep improving over the following months. For many treatments we'll arrange an in-person review 2 to 4 weeks afterwards to check your progress.

Why do my scars look worse straight after laser?

Redness, swelling, MENDs and peeling all make texture look more pronounced for a while. Scar remodelling is gradual, as new collagen forms over several months, so the first week is the wrong time to judge your result. Deeper or older scars may need a series of treatments.

Most laser regrets come from expectations that weren't clear at the start. That's why we explain realistic results, recovery and the number of sessions at consultation. If something worries you during healing, contact us rather than waiting.

What should I put on my skin after laser resurfacing?

Keep it simple. Your aftercare plan will tell you exactly what to use and when, but these principles apply to most people:

  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry.
  • Use a soothing, gentle moisturiser to keep healing skin comfortable. Our sensitive and post-treatment skincare range has options our team can help you choose from.
  • Don't pick or scrub flakes, MENDs or peeling skin. Let them shed on their own.
  • Pause active skincare such as retinoids, acids and exfoliants until we tell you to restart.
  • Check before adding new products, including growth factor or exosome serums, so we can make sure they suit your healing skin.
  • Protect your skin with SPF. New skin is more sensitive to the sun. Wear a high-factor, broad-spectrum sunscreen every day once we've said it's fine, and keep out of direct sun to help lower the risk of pigmentation.
  • Wait for the go-ahead on make-up. We'll tell you when it's safe to restart.

When to contact us

Redness, warmth, swelling, roughness and peeling are expected. Contact us straight away if you notice:

  • Pain, heat or redness that keeps getting worse
  • Pus, yellow crusting or weeping, or you feel feverish and unwell
  • Blisters, including clusters of small blisters that could be a cold sore flare
  • Dark or light patches developing as your skin heals

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to recover from laser resurfacing?

It depends on the laser and depth. The initial healing period after Sciton HALO is usually 5 to 7 days, ProFractional has minimal downtime, and deeper Contour TRL resurfacing usually needs 1 to 2 weeks. Results keep improving for months as collagen remodels.

What should I put on my skin after laser resurfacing?

Keep it gentle: a mild cleanser, a soothing moisturiser and daily SPF once we say it's fine. Pause retinoids, acids and exfoliants, and check with us before adding new products.

Why do my scars look worse straight after laser?

Redness, swelling, MENDs and peeling make texture look more obvious in the first days. Scar remodelling happens gradually over several months, so it's best to judge results at your review.

Is erbium laser recovery easier than CO2?

It can be. Er:YAG gives precise ablation with less thermal damage to surrounding tissue, so depth and recovery can be tailored more closely. Recovery still depends on how deep the treatment goes.

When can I wear make-up after laser resurfacing?

It depends on your treatment and how your skin is healing. Your practitioner will tell you when to restart make-up and active skincare.

Can I have laser resurfacing after Accutane?

Tell us at your consultation if you've taken Accutane (isotretinoin) or other acne medication. Your practitioner will review your history and advise on the right timing before recommending any resurfacing.

Laser resurfacing can help with several concerns. See our treatment guides for acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles and pigmentation and sun damage.
