Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an advanced skin treatment which is great for skin rejuvenation. The treatment is a concentrated mix of plasma from your blood. Plasma is the healing component within our blood that contains healing growth factors that help to improve your complexion and skin texture by stimulating new cell growth, production of new collagen and elastin. This is what gives the skin a healthy youthful appearance. Contrary to popular belief, and images that went viral of Kim Kardashian with blood on her face we do not use the red blood during treatment. Plasma is a clear straw coloured liquid.

The use of plasma has been used for decades in the medical field to treat sports injuries, wound healing and joint surgery. The benefits led to widespread use for anti-aging and regenerative purposes. This treatment uses your own blood and is considered a safe treatment option as there is no risk of allergic reaction or complications as there are no synthetic substances used and the reason why it is a great alternative to dermal filler. Especially for patients who are either not candidates for facial filler or prefer a more natural treatment approach.

There are many aesthetic applications for the use of blood plasma— in our skin fibroblasts are the cells responsible for making key proteins such as collagen and elastin, both of which are important for keeping the skin supple and youthful and deplete year on year from the age of 25.  Fibroblasts also play a key role in the aging process beyond making collagen and elastin, they also interact with other skin cells as well as the overall matrix underneath the skin, creating skin tightening.

Although predominantly used on the face, particularly around the eyes, mouth and nose, the treatment may also be used on the backs of the hands and all over the body; more commonly the décolletage and neck to give a more youthful and radiant appearance. It is a very popular and successful alternative to Tear Trough filler.

Injected just below the surface of the skin, it can help reverse the signs of aging in the skin, including eliminating or improving the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin.

6ml of your plasma is used and injected into the areas of concern. This is done using very small needles and sometimes a cannula. 3 treatments 4 weeks apart are recommended and results last for as long as 2 years.

The doctor will take a sample of blood. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge for a few minutes and spun at high speed to isolate platelets and other healing growth factors and then resuspended into a platelet-rich solution. This provides us with 6mls of plasma to inject into you. The plasma and serum are extracted and then re-injected back into the patients skin. The whole procedure only involves needle injections to the desired areas, requires virtually no healing time and also reduces possible side effects to a minimum.

Patients will usually feel the immediate effects of treatment after it is performed and during the next few weeks the collagen will begin to grow and generate more and more healthy cells underneath the skin. That is when the optimum results of the procedure are felt.

A course of 3, 4 weeks apart, is required. Depending on the area treated, repeat treatments may be necessary to continue the desired effects. Facial rejuvenation procedures may require 1-3 treatments yearly, depending on the treatment.

A small blood sample is taken from your arm, and the PRP is then injected using fine needles. Topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand, and most patients describe mild discomfort rather than pain.

Plasma injections are autologous, meaning it has come from you, so side effects are very mild because it is unlikely that the body will have an adverse reaction to its own materials. At most, you may expect to experience mild to moderate swelling and/or redness in the area of treatment, which are common side effects.
In addition, because a volume of fluid is administered to the area, some mild swelling can occur and may take a few days to disappear.

PRP stimulates your own collagen to grow for total facial rejuvenation rather than individual area improvement. In contrast, hyaluronic acid fillers work by means of solid material that fill lines and skin folds in the face. These fillers are indicated to soften deeper lines such as the folds around the mouth. PRP treatment is more effective for volumising the face, plumping out cheek indentations, softening eye hollows, improve the overall tone, tightness, and texture of the skin, and filling in areas where hyaluronic acid fillers cannot reach or are not safe to use.
