Targeted laser treatment for acne scars, C-section scars and surgical scars
Sciton ProFractional is a fractional laser treatment designed to target scar tissue, rather than resurfacing the entire area.
Scars can leave the skin looking indented, tethered, uneven or different in texture from the surrounding skin. ProFractional creates precise microscopic treatment columns within the scar to encourage collagen remodelling and improve the way the scar blends with the surrounding skin.
At Nassif MedSpa in MediaCity, Manchester, we use ProFractional for acne scars, C-section scars, surgical scars and other localised areas of scarring.
ProFractional works by creating microscopic columns of controlled treatment within the scar tissue. Importantly, not all of the skin is treated.
Healthy areas of skin are left between each microscopic column. These untreated areas provide healthy tissue around the treated zones, helping support the healing process while the treated scar tissue remodels.
This fractional approach means we can concentrate treatment on the scar itself without needing to resurface the entire surrounding area.
Acne scars can leave depressions, uneven surfaces and areas of skin that appear tethered or indented. ProFractional can target these changes within the scar tissue, encouraging collagen remodelling over time.
The type of acne scar matters, so your practitioner will assess the individual scars rather than treating all acne scarring in the same way.
A C-section scar can remain noticeable even after the incision has completely healed. Some scars become indented, raised, uneven or tight, while others have a noticeably different texture from the surrounding abdomen.
ProFractional can be used directly on the C-section scar to target textural changes and encourage scar remodelling.
If redness or pigmentation is also present, other treatments such as BBL may be considered alongside ProFractional.
ProFractional can also be used for other healed surgical or traumatic scars where uneven texture, indentation or changes in the scar tissue remain.
The treatment is focused on the scar rather than unnecessarily treating large areas of unaffected skin.
Scars are not always a single concern. You may have a change in texture, pigmentation, redness or surrounding skin quality at the same time.
For this reason, ProFractional can sometimes be combined with other laser treatments as part of a wider treatment plan. For example, BBL can be used to address redness or pigmentation, while ProFractional focuses specifically on the scar's texture.
For C-section scars, other treatments such as HALO may also be considered where there are additional concerns with surrounding skin texture or stretch marks.
Your practitioner will assess the scar and surrounding skin before deciding whether a combination of treatments would be appropriate.
ProFractional is a targeted treatment.
Instead of removing a continuous layer across the whole treatment area, it creates microscopic treatment columns separated by areas of untreated skin. This allows the treatment to be concentrated where the scar is present while healthy surrounding tissue remains intact.
This is what makes ProFractional particularly useful for individual scars and localised scarring.
For patients requiring broader or deeper resurfacing across an area of skin, Sciton Contour TRL may be considered instead. The two treatments use the same Erbium laser technology but are used differently.
Not every scar will respond in the same way to laser treatment. Your practitioner will assess the type, depth, texture and location of the scar, as well as how it has healed.
Your consultation will establish whether ProFractional is appropriate and whether it should be used alone or alongside another laser or treatment.

Yes. ProFractional can be used for depressed, uneven and textured acne scars by creating microscopic treatment columns within the scar tissue. The aim is to encourage collagen remodelling so the scar becomes less defined and blends more naturally with the surrounding skin.
Yes. ProFractional can be applied directly to a healed C-section scar where there are changes in texture, indentation, tethering or uneven scar tissue. If the scar also has redness or pigmentation, another treatment such as BBL may be considered alongside ProFractional.
Yes. ProFractional can be used on a range of healed surgical scars, including scars that remain indented, uneven or noticeably different in texture from the surrounding skin. Treatment is concentrated on the scar rather than resurfacing a large area of unaffected skin.
Scar remodelling is gradual. The treated scar continues to change as new collagen is produced and the tissue remodels, so improvement develops over several months rather than immediately after treatment. The response also depends on the type, depth and age of the scar.
ProFractional creates microscopic treatment columns with healthy skin left between them. This provides healthy tissue between the treated areas, helping the skin heal while the scar tissue remodels. It also allows treatment to be concentrated on a localised scar without resurfacing the surrounding skin unnecessarily.
Yes. Different lasers can address different aspects of a scar. For example, ProFractional can target scar texture while BBL addresses redness or pigmentation. For C-section scars, HALO may also be considered where there are additional concerns with the surrounding skin or stretch marks.
The number of treatments depends on the type, depth, size and age of the scar, as well as the level of improvement you are looking for. Some scars may show a noticeable improvement after one treatment, while older, more established or deeper scarring may require a series of treatments. Your practitioner will assess the scar and recommend the number and spacing of treatments based on how it has healed and how much remodelling is needed.
