BBL, short for BroadBand Light, is one of the most advanced laser treatments available for improving
skin tone, pigmentation, redness and overall radiance. At NassifMD Medical Spa we use the Sciton
BBL Hero system, the latest generation of this technology, to treat sun damage, broken capillaries,
rosacea-related redness and uneven skin tone with minimal downtime.

BBL is a more advanced version of IPL therapy. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and BBL stands for Broad Band Light.

This is an ideal low downtime treatment for sun-damaged and pigmented skin. Broad Band Light also has a regenerative effect on dermal fibroblasts and results in reactivation of protein synthesis that mimics younger skin – hence the treatment has been dubbed Sciton Forever Young.

The light energy delivered by BBL will gently heat the upper layers of your skin. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate your skin cells to regenerate. This process will restore your skin to its natural beauty, making it clearer, smoother, vibrant and younger looking.

BBL energy allows your physician to treat age and sun spots, small facial veins, and many other skin conditions. Your physician’s treatment plan will be tailored to match your skin type and your desired results. BBL has a solutions for your skin concerns:

  • Freckles and age spots
  • Small blood vessels and rosacea
  • Acne
  • Aging Skin
  • Loss of firmness

A 10 year research study from Stanford clearly documented that aging can be altered in human skin using BBL technology to provide a functional change, rather than just a cosmetic mimic of youthful appearance. This study reveals that the appearance of younger skin may be due to the differences observed in gene expression patterns of aged skin becoming more like young skin. (See link to Stanford Study)

BroadBand Light treatments can have a short-term and long-term effect on the aging process. The study goes on to say that according to their research, this form of therapy actually changes the way that your DNA works. It makes your skin cells act as if they were younger. They do this by rejuvenating your genes and the genetic code in your DNA. As a result, the genetic code of your skin cells is reset, and you are left with younger-looking skin.

The treatment can be combined with other Sciton procedures such as HALO to achieve an all over rejuvenation of the face and body.

FAQs

Results depend on what is being treated. Pigmentation can appear darker immediately after BBL before gradually fading, while redness and vascular concerns may improve as the treated vessels clear. Skin tone and overall appearance can continue to improve as the skin settles.

BBL and IPL both use broad-spectrum light, but BBL is Sciton's advanced light-based platform with highly adjustable treatment parameters. This allows the treatment to be tailored more precisely to the concern being treated, whether that is pigmentation, redness, visible vessels or certain acne-related concerns.

BBL is therefore not simply a generic IPL treatment. The ability to adjust the treatment parameters gives greater control over how the light is delivered and allows the treatment to be tailored to the individual skin and concern.

Yes. BBL can be used on areas such as the chest, neck, shoulders, legs, arms and hands, depending on the concern being treated. It can be particularly useful for visible sun damage, pigmentation, redness and uneven skin tone on areas that have had significant UV exposure.

Yes. BBL can target excess pigment associated with sun spots, age spots and other superficial pigmentation. The treated pigment may temporarily become darker before it gradually clears. Not all pigmentation is suitable for BBL, so the type and cause of the pigmentation need to be assessed first.

Yes. BBL can be combined with other Sciton treatments when different concerns need to be addressed. For example, BBL can target pigmentation or redness while MOXI or HALO focuses on texture and overall skin quality. The combination and timing will depend on your skin and treatment plan.

BBL can be used across a range of skin types, but your natural skin pigment affects how the light can be delivered. Darker or recently tanned skin may require different settings or an alternative approach, particularly when treating pigmentation. Your skin will be assessed before treatment.

BBL can target the red and vascular component of concerns such as rosacea, facial redness and visible small blood vessels. The light is absorbed by the targeted vessels, helping them to clear while the surrounding skin is protected. Rosacea has several possible triggers, so treatment is assessed individually.
