Possessing a wide jaw can refer to the look of a jawline that is dominant in appearance. Also known as a square jaw, this condition can be associated with masculine features that some people will feel looks disproportionate with the rest of the face. Possessing a wide jaw can refer to the look of a jawline that is dominant in appearance. Also known as a square jaw, this condition can be associated with masculine features that some people will feel looks disproportionate with the rest of the face.

A wide jaw can be due to one of two factors: the individual’s bone structure, or enlarged masseter muscles. However, in some cases it is a combination of both. A person’s genes will often be what determines their overall appearance, including their body shape, the way their features are formed and the unique colouring of their hair, skin and eyes

The jawbone is known medically as the mandible and in some cases where genetics are not the cause, this can change its shape from injury, trauma or certain medical conditions.

The masseter muscle is located at each side of the jaw and controls the opening and closing of the mouth. Genetics can also influence the size of this muscle, but it can become enlarged when it is overused. Excessive chewing (such as with those who frequently chew gum) can encourage the muscle to grow, as can some habitual conditions such as bruxism (teeth grinding) and jaw clenching.

Treatments that work to re-contour or reshape the jawline can be used to create a more streamlined look to the lower part of the face. At Nassif MedSpa dermal fillers can be administered to various points along the jawline or chin, bringing a more balanced and harmonious look.

If the masseter muscle has become larger, applying toxin directly into the muscle can help to relax the muscle and stop it from over contracting, which also effectively helps to stop the involuntary actions of grinding your teeth and clenching the jaw.

FAQs

A wide or square jaw can be caused by the underlying bone shape or by enlarged masseter (chewing) muscles, often linked to jaw clenching and teeth grinding. Muscle-related widening is very treatable without surgery.

Where the masseter muscle is the cause, injectable muscle-relaxing treatment slims the lower face gradually as the muscle reduces in bulk. It can also ease clenching and grinding. Your suitability is assessed at consultation.

The lower face slims progressively over four to eight weeks as the muscle relaxes, with results typically lasting four to six months. Repeat treatments maintain and can enhance the effect.
