Obagi Skincare UK: A Guide to Every Range

Obagi is one of the better-known names in medical-grade skincare, and also one of the more confusing. There are several ranges, the naming is inconsistent, some products need a prescription in the UK and others do not, and a search for “Obagi” returns a mix of authorised stockists and grey-market sellers.

This guide sorts that out. We are an authorised Obagi stockist and use the range in clinic at NassifMD Medical Spa, MediaCityUK, Manchester, so what follows reflects what we actually dispense and see results from — not a catalogue summary.

What is Obagi?

Obagi Medical is a skincare brand founded in 1988, built around the idea that skin health is achieved through active ingredients at clinically meaningful concentrations rather than through cosmetic formulations. Its products sit in the category usually described as medical-grade or cosmeceutical: higher concentrations of actives, supported by clinical testing, and generally sold through clinics rather than high-street retail.

Obagi Medical, Obagi Clinical and ZO Skin Health — what's the difference?

This trips up more people than anything else about the brand.

Obagi Medical is the clinical range, sold through authorised providers. It includes the systems most people associate with the name, such as Nu-Derm.

Obagi Clinical is a lighter retail line aimed at general consumers, available without a clinic relationship.

ZO Skin Health is a different company. Dr Zein Obagi founded Obagi Medical and later left to create ZO. The two brands share a surname and nothing else — different ownership, different formulations. If you have used ZO and assume Obagi is the same thing, it is not.

What we stock at NassifMD is Obagi Medical.

The Obagi ranges explained

Nu-Derm

The system Obagi is best known for, designed as a staged programme for pigmentation, sun damage and uneven tone rather than as individual products. It works by accelerating cell turnover while addressing pigment, which is why it is structured in numbered steps.

We stock the Nu-Derm Fx System along with individual steps including the Gentle Cleanser, Foaming Cleanser, Toner and Exfoderm Forte.

ELASTIderm

Aimed at firmness and elasticity rather than pigment. This is the range to look at if your concern is skin that has lost bounce, particularly around the eyes.

We stock the ELASTIderm Eye Cream, Eye Serum, Facial Serum and Lift and Sculpt Facial Moisturiser.

Professional-C

Vitamin C serums in three strengths — 10%, 15% and 20%. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps defend against environmental damage and supports brightness and even tone.

Start lower than you think. The 20% is not automatically better for you than the 10%, and sensitive or reactive skin usually does better building up.

CLENZIderm M.D.

Formulated for acne-prone and congested skin, using salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to clear pores and reduce breakout-causing bacteria. We stock the Cleanser and Pore Therapy.

If acne is your primary concern, this range often works best alongside in-clinic acne treatment rather than on its own.

Hydrate

Straightforward moisturisers, useful both as a standalone and for buffering the dryness that active ranges can cause. Options include Hydrate Facial Moisturiser, Hydrate Light, Hydrate Luxe and Hydro-Drops.

Obagi-C

A vitamin C-based system for brightening, including the C Cleansing Gel, C-Balancing Toner and C-Exfoliating Day Lotion.

Sun Shield

SunShield Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 50. Unglamorous and the single most important product in this article. Every active range above increases photosensitivity, and using them without daily SPF works against you.

Which Obagi range is right for my skin?

As a rough guide:

  • Pigmentation, melasma, sun damage — Nu-Derm, often alongside in-clinic pigmentation treatment
  • Loss of firmness, crepey texture, eye area — ELASTIderm
  • Dullness, environmental protection — Professional-C or Obagi-C
  • Breakouts, congestion, oily skin — CLENZIderm
  • Dryness, or buffering an active routine — Hydrate
  • Everyone, every day — Sun Shield

The honest caveat: matching a range to a concern from a list is a starting point, not a plan. Skin that looks dull might be dehydrated, pigmented or barrier-damaged, and those need different products.

Is Obagi prescription-only in the UK?

Partly, and this is where UK guidance differs from what you will read on American websites.

Some Obagi systems are formulated with prescription-strength actives such as hydroquinone and tretinoin. In the UK these are prescription-only medicines. They cannot lawfully be sold over the counter or shipped to you online, and they require a consultation with a prescriber who has assessed your skin.

The products we sell on our site are the non-prescription range. The Nu-Derm Fx system, for example, is formulated without hydroquinone for exactly this reason.

If you need prescription-strength treatment, that is a conversation in clinic, not a checkout. Be wary of any UK site offering prescription-strength Obagi without a consultation.

How long does Obagi take to work?

Longer than most people expect, and the early stage can look worse before better.

Active ranges commonly cause dryness, flaking, redness and sensitivity in the first few weeks as cell turnover accelerates. This is anticipated rather than a reaction, but it is also the point at which most people abandon a routine.

If you are not sure whether what you are seeing is normal, our guide on how to tell retinol purging from irritation explains the difference.

Meaningful change in pigmentation and tone generally takes 12 to 16 weeks. Skin renews on roughly a six-week cycle, and pigment sits deeper than a single cycle can address.

Is Obagi suitable for sensitive skin?

Sometimes, with care. Sensitivity is not an automatic exclusion, but it changes how you start — lower strengths, fewer actives at once, and building frequency gradually rather than using everything nightly from day one.

Where there is an active condition such as rosacea, eczema or dermatitis, the active ranges are generally not the right starting point. Treat the condition first.

Where to buy genuine Obagi in the UK

Obagi is widely counterfeited and widely diverted. Products sold through unauthorised channels may be expired, stored badly or not genuine, and no active range performs if the actives have degraded.

Buy from an authorised stockist. You can shop our Obagi Medical range with UK delivery, or collect from the clinic.

Obagi at NassifMD Medical Spa, Manchester

We use Obagi alongside in-clinic treatment rather than instead of it. Medical-grade skincare prepares skin for procedures such as chemical peels and laser resurfacing, protects the result afterwards, and maintains it between appointments. Used on its own it can achieve a great deal; used as part of a plan it achieves more.

Our clinic is at The Alexandra, 200–220 The Quays, MediaCityUK, Salford, M50 3SP, with on-site private parking and a Metrolink stop at MediaCityUK.

If you are unsure which range suits your skin, book a skin consultation and we will assess it properly rather than guess. You can also browse all medical-grade skincare or get in touch.

This article is general information, not individual medical advice. Prescription-strength skincare requires a consultation with a prescriber.
