Why does hair grow back after laser hair removal? Paradoxical growth, PCOS and realistic results
Quick answer: hair can grow back after laser hair removal because laser gives long-term reduction, and hormones, especially with PCOS, can keep activating new follicles over time. Rarely, laser can trigger paradoxical hair growth, where nearby hair becomes thicker or darker. Most people need a course of 6 to 8 sessions, and occasional top-ups are normal where hormones play a part.
The same frustrations come up online again and again. People with PCOS say their facial hair keeps coming back after years of laser. Others ask why their hairs take two weeks to fall out, or why nobody warned them that laser can sometimes make hair thicker. Those are fair questions, and you deserve straight answers before you book.
At NassifMD Medical Spa in MediaCityUK, Manchester, every course of laser hair removal starts with a consultation and patch test. We talk honestly about what laser can and can't do, including the less talked-about risks.

How our experts tailor laser hair removal to you
Good results come from choosing the right laser and settings for your skin, hair and hormones. Our medically led team uses the Cynosure Elite+, which combines two wavelengths in one platform:
- Alexandrite 755nm. Ideal for lighter skin tones with dark, coarse hair.
- Nd:YAG 1064nm. Designed for darker skin types. It reaches deeper into the follicle while limiting absorption by the pigment in the surrounding skin.
- A plan built around you. At your consultation we look at your skin type, hair colour and thickness, medical history, hormonal influences and goals, then explain how many sessions to expect and what's realistic.

Why does hair grow back after laser hair removal?
Laser targets follicles that are in their active growth phase. At any one time, some of your follicles are resting, so each session only reaches part of the hair in an area. That's why treatment is a course, spaced several weeks apart to match your natural hair growth cycle.
Laser gives long-term reduction
Over a full course, hair usually becomes finer, lighter, slower growing and less dense. Some fine hairs can remain, and new follicles can become active later in life, particularly when hormones change.
Why does hair grow back patchy after laser?
Patchy regrowth between sessions is common, because hairs on different growth cycles come through at different times. If patches are still there towards the end, we'll review your plan with you.
What is paradoxical hair growth and who gets it?
Paradoxical hair growth is when hair in or near a treated area becomes thicker, darker or more noticeable after laser. It's uncommon, but it's a recognised effect, and we think you should hear about it from us before treatment.
The cause isn't fully understood. One theory is that low-level heat at the edge of a treated area may stimulate fine, dormant hairs.
Who is more at risk?
- People with darker skin tones and dark hair
- People with hormonal conditions such as PCOS
- Treatment on the face and neck, such as the cheeks, jawline and neck
- Areas with lots of fine, downy hair
What we do about it
We talk through your individual risk at consultation, choose the wavelength and settings carefully, and check how your hair responds between sessions. If you notice hair becoming thicker or darker, tell us. It can often be managed with further treatment using adjusted settings, and we'll go through the options with you.
Will laser hair removal work if I have PCOS?
For many people with PCOS, yes. Laser can reduce coarse facial hair on the chin, jawline, upper lip and neck. PCOS-related facial hair is something we commonly treat.
Because hormones keep encouraging new growth, it's best to think of results as long-term reduction with maintenance. Many people with PCOS need occasional top-up sessions after their main course. If your hair keeps coming back after years of laser, it can also help to speak to your GP about the hormonal side alongside treatment. Read our guide to PCOS and laser hair removal.
How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?
Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on your skin type, hair colour and thickness, the area being treated and any hormonal influences. Dark, coarse hair often responds well, while finer or hormonally driven hair can take longer.
After your course, occasional maintenance sessions may be recommended, especially where hormones affect hair growth.
Hair falling out after laser: what's normal?
Treated hairs don't fall out on the day. Most people notice shedding within one to two weeks. During that time the hairs can look as though they're still growing, as they're pushed out of the follicle. So if your hairs take around two weeks to fall out, that's normal.
- First 48 hours: skin can look slightly red, and treated follicles may look raised and bumpy.
- A few days later: some people get mild itching. It tends to settle on its own.
- Weeks 1 to 2: treated hairs shed.
- Between sessions: some hairs regrow, usually finer than before.
Hair not falling out after laser? Not every hair sheds after every session, because resting hairs weren't in their growth phase. If very little sheds after several sessions, let us know so we can review your settings and plan. Avoid plucking or waxing between sessions, as laser needs the hair in the follicle to work.
Is laser hair removal safe on darker skin tones?
It can be, with the right laser and an experienced team. The Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength is designed for darker skin types, and every treatment starts with a patch test so we can see how your skin responds. If you've heard conflicting advice, read the truth behind common laser hair removal myths.

Frequently asked questions
Why does hair grow back thicker after laser?
This is called paradoxical hair growth. It's uncommon and seems more likely on the face and neck, in darker skin tones and with hormonal conditions such as PCOS. Tell us if you notice it, as it can often be managed with adjusted settings.
Will laser hair removal work if I have PCOS?
For many people, yes. Laser can reduce coarse facial hair linked to PCOS, but hormones can keep activating new follicles, so occasional top-up sessions after your main course are common.
How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?
Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance. The exact number depends on your skin, hair, treatment area and hormones.
Is it normal for hairs to take two weeks to fall out after laser?
Yes. Most people notice treated hairs shedding within one to two weeks. They can look like they're still growing while they're pushed out of the follicle.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
A full course gives significant, long-term hair reduction. Hair usually becomes finer, lighter and slower growing, and some people choose occasional top-ups to maintain results, especially where hormones are involved.
Is laser hair removal safe on dark skin?
It can be, with the right laser. We use the Cynosure Elite+, which includes an Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength designed for darker skin types, and every course starts with a consultation and patch test.
